Summer is a time when the youth football programs sign up players and organize their teams.  It is also a time when many parents and players are faced with the issue of deciding which weight division is best for the player to compete in.  If done correctly and if begun far enough in advance, a combination of sensible eating and regular exercise will get the player close enough to an ideal weight, so that when the actual football practices begin, the rigorous training will enable the player to get down to an appropriate weight for his or her body type.  Problems often occur, however; when parents and/or players attempt to choose a weight division that is too light, and/or fail to commit to a safe but effective weight loss strategy.  This often results in attempts to lose too much weight too fast; often using unsafe methods.
